Alfalfa water productivity and yield gaps in the U.S. central Great Plains

چکیده
Yield gap (Yg) analyses using farmer-reported yield and management data have been performed for a number of annual grain crops, but it lacks perennial forages. The U.S. accounts 21 % the global alfalfa production with large rainfed area located in central Great Plains, serving as an interesting case-study Yg Most existing quantified magnitude failed to identify associated practices reduce it. Challenging this analysis, systematic benchmark water productivity [WP, kg dry matter per mm evapotranspiration (ETc)] that allows quantification farmer fields does not exist. Our objectives were (i) WP, (ii) quantify fields, (iii) opportunities improve yield. We conducted review literature compiled database on ETc (n = 68 papers 1027 treatment means) from which WP boundary function was derived. collected 394 commercial during 2016–2019 Kansas. then used satellite imagery define growing season (and corresponding supply) each field. calculate field, conditional inference trees (CIT) explored impact increased suggested 34 ha-1 mm-1. Farmer-reported ranged 0.9 19.0 Mg ha-1, averaging 7.6 ha-1. Alfalfa water-limited potential (Yw) 11.1 23.2 resulting average 54–60 Yw. Row spacing, seeding rates, phosphorus fertilizer major agronomic explaining yields followed by surrogate variables sowing season, stand age, soil pH. study provided first analysis estimating attainable ETc, suggesting exist Plains. also identified key here derived can be future studies aiming at quantifying across globe. This initial step its causes we highlight limitations directions forages analyses.

متن کاملYield and Agronomic Traits of Waxy Proso in the Central Great Plains
Proso (Panicum miliaceum L.) is a summer annual grass capable of producing seed in 60 to 90 d. This characteristic, and its effi cient use of water, makes it well suited to the short, and often hot and dry, growing season in the high plains of the central Great Plains. The introduction of novel end-use characteristics such as waxy starch can stimulate an increased market for proso. We evaluated...
متن کاملLitter decomposition in grasslands of Central North America (US Great Plains)
One of the major concerns about global warming is the potential for an increase in decomposition and soil respiration rates, increasing CO2 emissions and creating a positive feedback between global warming and soil respiration. This is particularly important in ecosystems with large belowground biomass, such as grasslands where over 90% of the carbon is allocated belowground. A better understan...
متن کاملChanging Employment Patterns on the Northern and Central Great Plains
The Great Plains are sometimes characterized as an economically lagging region. To shed some light on the region sprospects, the locational and structural changes in employment patterns in the northern and central Great Plains were examinedfor the 1980 to 1990 period. County-level data were drawn from CD-ROM census publications and matched with locational references using Atlas *GIS . Shift-sha...
متن کاملAvian Response to Meadow Restoration in the Central Great Plains
Native grassland is one of the most heavily degraded of all North American ecosystems, and restoration of altered grasslands is a tool used to mitigate some of the biological ramifications of past land use practices. Providing habitat for grassland-dependent bird species often is one of the many goals of restoration. We evaluated the efficacy of meadow restoration for breeding birds in the Nebr...
